Virii

From the manual:

"A destructive corruption of the native Darwinians, these evil creatures will attack anything that comes within range. They're fairly weak and don't do much damage on their own, but they can be found to have replicated in very large numbers, posing a much greater threat. Virii can replicate rapidly by fertilising Eggs (laid by Spiders and Spore Generators) with the Souls of dead Creatures."

Appearance:

Virii are visually represented by long strings of glowing red triangles that travel snake-like across Darwinia's terrain.

Manouverability:

Virii are grouped together in a ranged area, and are restricted to movement within that area. The number of Virii in any given area, and size of the ranged area may vary from group to group. Virii can and will leave the ranged area in pursuit of a player unit. Virii move slower than most player units, but move faster than Darwinians. Virii can pass through laser fences? unhindered. They can also chase Engineers across water.

Attack Patterns:

Once a Virii detects a player unit in its vicinity, it homes in on it, and basically heads straight for it at its maximum speed. Much like Ants, once they lock onto a unit, they are relentless, and will pursue it until they, or the pursued unit, are destroyed.

Attack Strategies:

Virii are the most prevalent of the enemy forces, and also the most easily destroyed. Simply aim for the 'head' triangle with your Squad's Lasers. Take out large clumps quickly with Grenades, Air Strikes, or Rockets. Battle Cannons are also effective, as are well-managed groups of v3.0 or higher Darwinians.
