Souls

All Darwinians have a soul - a digital soul that makes them individual and unique. When the Virii came to Darwinia, they corrupted the Darwinians, but they still retain their digital souls. When destroyed, a Darwinian or an enemy will leave behind a small coloured diamond-shaped soul. They will linger on the landscape for a minute or so, and then slowly float away, to join with the other souls at the Soul Repository?, to once again be born into the world.

Enemy souls are red in colour. Darwinian souls are green. Yellow souls are left by Officers. Other then colour, there is no real functional difference between any of them.

Souls collected in the Receiver level are orange, and they float down from the Soul Repository? (ie - top of the level) rather than float up and away.

Engineers can collect these souls, and they can be resurrected as new Darwinians if you have captured and reprogrammed an Incubator on your current level. After the Garden level, this process is usually necessary to complete level objectives, as until much later in the game, this is the only way to obtain new Darwinians? in a level.

When planning your course of action for a level, it is best to try and 'liberate' an Incubator early on, since souls don't stay on the ground very long after they are released from a destroyed Darwinian/enemy. It's a good idea to always have one or two Engineers start scooping up souls as you attack large groups of enemies.
