SoulDestroyer

From the manual:

"Additional mutations within the Virus structure granted some of the larger Centipedes the ability to fly, and these fearsome creatures now haunt some of the worst infected areas of Darwinia. They earnt(sic) their name when it was discovered the Souls they consume are actually obliterated - something which Dr. Sepulveda believed was simply impossible."

Appearance:

A flying enemy, Soul Destroyers are very large Centipede-like enemies with large heads. Unlike Centipedes, they are all one unit, and not made up of independant segments.

Manouverability:

Soul Destroyers meander around within a ranged area, and are restricted to movement within that area. Soul Destroyers are not usually densely packed together. Soul Destroyers can and will leave the ranged area in pursuit of a player unit. Soul Destroyers are rather quick compared to most other enemies and units. Soul Destroyers can pass through laser fences? unhindered. They can travel over water, as they are a flying enemy.

Attack Patterns:

Soul Destroyers will continue to fly around in apparently random fashion when they detect a player unit nearby, but will also make strike passes at it. These attacks can come from any angle. Soul Destroyers are not quite as agressive as Virii, but can take out an entire Squad if they come at it at the right angle. Soul Destroyers literally destroy the souls of Darwinians; those destroyed leave no soul? behind, and cannot be born again - hence their name.

Attack Strategies:

Soul Destroyers are tougher to kill than Centipedes, as they seem to be immune to lasers. Also, they are only vulnerable in the head area. Squads can employ Air Strikes, Grenades, or Rockets. All three are effective, but the Soul Destroyer is quick, and may fly away from Air Strike beacons or Grenades before they have done their job. Rockets must be well-placed, and well-timed - expect to lose a few Squads before you get it right. Battle Cannons are also effective, but the Soul Destroyers can and will destroy the Darwinians manning the Cannon if they get the chance before they are taken out.

If you have an expendable squad member(such as a lone survivor from another attack), you can put him between your full squad and the Soul Destroyer, and back your full squad up to a comfortable firing positiong with Rockets. When the Soul Destroyer comes back for an attack pass, he may go for your 'lame duck', giving you a perfect firing opportunity for 5 or 6 rockets, without risking your own squad in the explosions.
