Santa Hats: Play the game on December 25th or 26th Christmas Day (or change your computer's clock to December 25th or 26th any other day of the year), and it will be snowing in all levels, and approximately 1/3 of the Darwinians in the level will be wearing Santa hats!

New Years Eve: Play the game during New Years Eve and when the clock changes to 0:00 (midnight), the whole terrain will become golden.

Centipedes

The way in which the Centipedes split apart is a nod to the classic Atari arcade game, Centipede. (Wikipedia(approve sites))

Triffids

The Triffids are a reference to an old Story/Movie/TV show, "Day of the Triffids", in which walking, alien plants blinded the inhabitants of Earth and preyed on them for food. Oddly enough, the defining characteristic of the Triffids were that they could walk, unlike the Triffids in Darwinia. (Wikipedia(approve sites))

Engineers

are (extremely obviously) modelled after the "Recognizer" unit from the movie Tron(approve sites).
